The editorial “Indian Services in Asean” ( Business Line November 21) rightly pointed out the justification for a free trade agreement (FTA) in services with ASEAN countries.
Though India is not able to maintain a trade surplus on goods with those countries, the FTA is a satisfactory trade channel in the absence of global guidelines for free trade, given the fiasco on Doha round.
India is pushing for the agreement on investment on services to convert the free trade agreement into Comprehensive Economic Co-operation. Agreement (CECA). The new agreement will enhance rapid expansion in trade and investment flows in the direction.
Also, India has to cash in on the strained ties that Asean countries have with China

Mamata’s moves
It refers to “Trinamool inches towards NDA camp” ( Business Line , November 21).
Though Mamata Banerjee’s joining the NDA at a later stage cannot be ruled out, NDA would be quite aware of her propensity to throw tantrums. how She was part of the NDA government under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The latest issue of FDI in retail might bring her closer to BJP and NDA but how things turn out after that, no one can tell. NDA, too, would like to weigh its options.
