The Assam chief minister is in a soup for having joined jhumur dancers at the inauguration of a hospital, when the nation was mourning the death of former President, APJ Abdul Kalam. This insensitive behaviour was rightly condemned by the Opposition and civil groups across the State.

Ending terrorism

Can the execution of Yakub Memon end terrorism in the world? Courts across the world must think of alternative ways of punishing terrorists so that the evil is stamped out. A united strategy is welcome. Execution is cowardice.

Shashi Tharoor has stirred an uncharitable controversy by saying “cold-blooded execution has never prevented a terror attack anywhere” and added that the principle and practice of death penalty is questionable. Is Tharoor not aware that the Supreme Court was opened in the dead of night and that three judges were preparing at 3.00 am (today) to decide whether to entertain a down-to-the-wire plea to postpone the hanging?

We seem to politicise everything, even the delivery of justice. Editorials, seem oblivious to the barbaric crime Yakub perpetrated along with Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim. Such misplaced sympathies will unwittingly brainwash people about the alleged double standards of the Indian justice system. So long as the death penalty is on the statute book, there can be little objection if the state implements the sentence.

Gender discrimination

As rightly said in the article, ‘Of girls, boys, schools and schooling’ by Sudipta Sarangi and Chandan Jha (July 30), coed education has advantages that outweigh the few distasteful happenings.

Gender discrimination was prevalent when very few women ventured out, which is not the case now. There are more women in various professions. Smaller families also make a difference.

In order to promote a better understanding of the other gender, to benefit each other mutually, it is very important to promote co-education at school so that when children become adults and share a working relationship, it is healthy. Particularly when the third gender is gaining space today, stereotyping and sexism at the school level would be a defeatist approach.

Scale up capacities

MY Khan is correct in his assessment that ‘Lowering interest rates is not a good idea’ (July 30) as they play a marginal role in accelerating or decelerating the industrial growth rate. Indian business is not able to cope with the lower prices offered by Chinese manufacturers whose cheap goods have flooded the market. The solution lies in scaling up the capacity to reduce the margin on profit, thereby reducing prices which will match that of Chinese goods.

In fact this is a real ‘Make in India’ campaign that needs to be encouraged; it can vitalise production, and increase GDP and stock market indices. As the Chinese economy is facing problems due to its own heated growth, the Centre should do everything possible to increase scalability of projects and not just provide sops.

Simple and substantial

This refers to your edit, ‘Fuzzy logic’ (July 30). We need to keep the language of our laws as simple as possible and at the same time sound in substance to prevent dubious promoters from collecting and managing public money. The regulatory agencies should have enough resources to pursue and prosecute these instances of fraud. Our regulators should have enough powers to shut these dubious companies and we need to have a timeframe to call the shots. Timely response by regulators will ensure public confidence in our financial system.

The larger picture clearly is that the financial markets exist to channel savings into productive investments; this needs a protective ecosystem if the end purpose needs to be served. Our laws and regulators are not up there yet.
