The State Bank of India asking its officers to meet loan-seekers only at its branches appears to be a little unrealistic.
Meeting the prospective borrower at his place of stay/business/work is essential to realistically assess the viability of his loan proposal, and it also helps to enhance the quality of loan appraisal.
Meeting the borrowers/prospective borrowers at places away from the branches need not endanger transparency and integrity as long as the intention is just and fair. One hopes that the bank’s directive will not rob its officers of drive and proactiveness. The bank would do well to apply the ‘trust but verify” dictum. C.G. Kuriakose

Voice of justice
In the passing away of Nelson Mandela, Africa and the world have lost a great leader who tirelessly fought for justice. Mandela was to South Africa what Mahatma Gandhi was to India — a father figure who fearlessly opposed all forms of apartheid and oppression. He gave his citizens hope and confidence and made them feel that they were second to none. He was not only the voice of South Africa but also of humanity. He inspired millions around the globe by his courage, simplicity and integrity. He received many honours, including the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding contributions in promoting peace. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna which shows how much India valued him.
The Madiba is no more but his ideas and ideals for a world of equality will live on for ever.

Disinvestment
Your editorial “Seize the opportunity” emphasises the need to revive the primary market taking advantage of the ‘soaring Sensex’. But it is to be noted that if the primary market is to be successful, there is to be a quantum jump in the economy, especially in the industrial sector since investors, especially the FIIs, are sensitive to the performance of the manufacturing units. If the government comes forward to fulfil SEBI requirements of minimum public holding and starts the process of disinvestment and enters the primary market it would give an impetus to the private players in the industrial sector also to enter the primary market.
