The Cabinet’s approval for treating juveniles committing heinous crimes including rape, as adults, is welcome. It is absurd to let off these criminals with minor punishment just because they are a few years short of adulthood. Political parties should not come in the way of implementing this. It is a shame that our political parties are interested only in their self-motivated political games and don’t display any responsibility, even in serious things affecting society.

Free CBI
Minister Jitendra Singh informing the Lok Sabha that the Government will neither interfere in the functioning of the CBI nor intervene in its judicial functioning is music to the ears of those who uphold its independence. The NDA must consider giving autonomy to this premier investigation agency.

Women and tradition
This refers to “Freedom first” by Veena Venugopal (Aug 7). What Indian women really require is the freedom to enjoy their legitimate rights. In the case of a married woman, her husband has a signal role to play to foster her individuality and personality. The saying goes: “Behind every successful man there is a woman.” Behind a successful woman, her husband has to stand in the kitchen sometimes. It is only just and fair.

Every woman has to play the role of the traditional wife. She wants greater recognition for this from her spouse, that is all. Whether family or organisation or profession or country, subordination and unconditional support is a must for progress. Why don’t we appreciate the 90 per cent which is ok for all of us, instead of criticising or concentrating on the remaining 10 per cent where we have differences of opinion? The traditional wife is the role model for the progress of the country.

True colours?
In taking on the Government and forcing it to agree for a discussion over rising incidents of communal violence in the country, the Congress has shown that it will not be cowed down anymore. By making his presence felt the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has at last shown an inclination to lead from the front. Are we seeing Rahul’s true colours now?

Totally unnecessary
Clubs, theatres, and so on are for people’s recreation and entertainment. We need to appreciate them for insisting on some dress codes. This essentially means that those who do not wish to follow them need not go there at all. It is as simple as that. The introduction of a Bill by the Tamil Nadu government, which empowers it to penalise the owners of clubs, theatres, mallsif they do not allow dhoti -clad men inside, is absolutely unnecessary.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa should be commended for taking up cudgels on behalf of dhoti -clad people. For what did we win freedom if we don’t even have the right to wear a dress that is quintessentially Indian? Every country must protect its traditions, customs, culture, languages and dress. In a free India citizens should dress in any way they like without being victimised and subjected to apartheid.
