Sept. 3: The Centre gives the State Trading Corporation of India the go-ahead to import 7.95 lakh tonnes of wheat at an average price of $389.45 a tonne, cost and freight.

Sept. 4: The Uttar Pradesh Government issues recovery certificates against 14 sugar mills that have not cleared their cane arrears for the current crushing season

Sept. 18: National Multi-Commodity Exchange introduces futures contract in menthol crystal.Transparent, colourless, dry needle-like pleasant-smelling menthol crystal is produced from mentha oil, with uses in confectionery and pharmaceutical formulations in the domestic and international markets.

Sept. 25: The Allahabad High Court has issued a mandamus directing the Uttar Pradesh Government to ensure full payment of cane arrears owed to growers by mills “within the next three weeks”.

Sept. 28: Merrill Lynch and Citigroup acquire 5 per cent stake each in the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd.

India overtakes the US as the second-largest cotton producer in the world for the 2006-07 season.

Bharti Enterprises and EL Rothschild Ltd announces that Del Monte Pacific Ltd, producers, marketers and distributors of premium food and beverage products, buys 40 per cent stake in their joint venture, FieldFresh Foods Pvt Ltd.
