The ‘pre-premium’ class of smartphones is seeing a lot of new entrants of late. You could as well call it the ‘Never Settle’ segment as various companies try to push out devices packed with specs at budget prices just the way OnePlus has done. But everyone doesn’t quite manage it.

A glass slab

The Lenovo Z2 Plus is trying to b a game changer with a smartphone that works on the flagship level processor Snapdragon 820. To look at, it’s very flat, glassy and Sony-like. All the glass is generally a waste because you have no choice but to put it into a case and a back cover is given in the box. I found it exceptionally fond of grime and unpleasant to the touch, always feeling as if it were covered with a layer of dust. Other than this, the Z2 Plus is a standard phone, though it’s a smaller than usual phone at just 5 inches. That should be good news for those who are on a frustrating hunt for smaller phones, of which there aren’t too many.

The 1080 x 1920 display is just fine with no major drawbacks or remarkable features. It looks good enough and works in sunlight if you turn up the brightness. Not too much has been done to make text and elements easy to read for those who have problems with their eyes however, and everything is a bit too small and light, despite adjustments.

Specs are not all

In trying to keep it simple, Lenovo has used the Google launcher on this phone on top of Android Marshmallow. But there’s still too much preloaded stuff to forgive. Still, there’s 64GB of storage and 50GB or so of that is available to use up. RAM is pegged at 4GB coupled with that Snapdragon 820. There’s no memory card slot. There happens to be a 32GB and 3GB RAM version of this phone for ₹17,999 as well. Despite the specs, I didn’t find the performance on this device super fast or impressively smooth. There was even a visible stutter when scrolling through screens. Even on benchmark tests, the scores were unimpressive. What’s probably needed is some optimisation to make the software and hardware work better together. The 13MP and 8MP cameras are just average.

The 3,500mAh battery performs well through the day. This is a dual-SIM device that supports 4G.

Price: ₹19,999

Love: Nice tweaks to the Home button

Hate: Camera that pulls it down, non-stellar performance
