Here’s a speaker that’s perfect for kids. The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom is like a toy speaker, though it’s an expensive toy at ₹7,995. With one or two of these around, your biggest worry will be whether the kids will lose them rather than whether they’ll get them damaged.

These pod-like gadgets are quite lightweight and come in funky colours to add to the fun. Dropping a Wonderboom, within reason, will see it survive just fine. The mesh that makes up its surface picks up fluff and will get dirty, but it can be rinsed off. In fact, it’s water resistant enough to take a dipping in the pool for up to a metre of water and will event float. The charging inlet is covered by a flap, so you must make sure that’s tightly shut before you hurl it into a pool. There’s a rope-like loop on top so you can carry it around on one finger.

The controls are funkily housed in a big plus and minus sign that makes up part of the design. On top, are buttons for power and pairing. The Wonderboom pod naturally gives out 360-degree sound because it’s shaped that way. As to what they sound like… they’re surprisingly loud for their size. Very loud. But don’t expect real bass or anything. At those very loud volumes the sound can be a little harsh and distorted, leaving pleasantness behind. But for those who are happy enough even listening on a mobile phone without speakers, the Wonderboom is a nice accessory, specially as it’s tough enough to travel. Predictably, UE says two of them pair nicely to give stereo sound and increase the overall decibel level. It’s a casual throw-about speaker rather than a product for music lovers who want high quality.
