For every rupee you pay for petrol, 55 paise go to the Government as taxes. How is the tax collected shared between the Centre and the States? Almost 2:1. The Central taxes add up to 38 per cent of taxes on the retail price of petrol, while the State taxes are 17 per cent.
In the case of diesel, it is 34 paise, shared almost 2:1, again. Central taxes are 23 per cent, and State taxes are at 11 per cent, according to the February 2006 Report of the Committee on Pricing and Taxation of Petroleum Products.
