Having announced the largest international takeover by an Indian company, that too in the steel sector, Mr Ratan Tata could not escape comparison with the global steel tycoon, Mr L.N. Mittal. Mr Mittal had been recently in the limelight for acquiring steelmaker Arcelor to become the largest steel producer in the world with a capacity of 110 million tonnes.

Tata Steel, with Corus, would have a capacity of 24 million tonnes. "I don't think that our sights are set to equal that of Mr Lakshmi Mittal," said Mr Tata, replying to a question to this effect. "Our focus is strategic fit, not tonnage," he said. "If Corus had a 5 million tonne capacity we would still have bought it," he said.
