India can boast of rich mango varieties it produces. But these varieties may not go well with people in other countries alike, says Dr M.V. Rao, former Director-General Grade scientist of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

Addressing a seminar on `Food safety audit - export opportunities of processed food to the US' here on Friday, he said the Filipinos didn't have a liking for mangoes that were sweet.

Similarly, people in Hong Kong like these fruits with brighter and attractive colours. People in Eastern nations liked different varieties, while their peers in other regions wanted other varieties. "While making plans for exports, one should keep this in mind and should have different plans for different regions," Dr Rao, who was also the vice-chancellor of Acharya N.G. Ranga University cautioned.

Despite the fact that India held leading position in production of fruits, it had a share of less than one per cent. While it is important to make efforts to put in place a facilitating environment, the stakeholders should also take into consideration several roadblocks such as poor infrastructure and smallholdings.
