The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has released 26 new improved and hybrids of crops developed by the Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University. The latest release took the total number of varieties and hybrids released by the university to 328 so far. Recently, the State's seed sub-committee cleared the new seeds. University officials said these attributedto address the issues of pests, diseases, drought resistance and suitability to different seasons. "These will not only increase productivity but also reduce cost of production," they said. Addressing a gathering after the release of seeds here on Wednesday, Dr Rajasekhara Reddy highlighted the need for increasing seed replacement and added that it should go up to 95 per cent from the present 35 per cent. "We allocated Rs 20 crore in this year's budget. Funds are no problem. We are willing to release more funds to achieve increased seed replacement that in turn will increase productivity," he said.
