The Coastal Karnataka Fisher People's Action Committee has urged the State Government to take up dredging in 15 fisheries harbours in Karnataka.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr Vasudeva Boloor, General Secretary of the committee, said that lack of dredging in fisheries harbours had led to accidents in some cases.

The Government should take up this task on a priority basis, he said.

Mr Boloor urged the Government to take steps to prevent sea erosion along the Karnataka coast.

Fr Thomas Kocherry, leader of the National Fishworkers Forum (NFF), said that NFF, in association with Coastal Karnataka Fisher People's Action Committee and Karnataka Farmers' Association, would conduct a rally in Mangalore on November 21 during which all these issues would be discussed. Nearly 50,000 people are likely to attend the rally.

He said that the Karnataka Government should form a high-power committee to assist the Planning Commission to deal in matters related to agriculture, fisheries and environment. The rally would discuss various other demands and urge the Government to implement them.
