MEDICINAL VALUE: Street vendors selling gooseberry at Kochi in Kerala. Amla, as gooseberry is known in ayurveda, is much sought after by the ayurvedic drug industry for its use as a major ingredient in certain drugs and food supplements. Northern States, especially Uttar Pradesh, contribute a lion's share to gooseberry production in the country.
