AUSTRADE, the Australian Trade Commission, is stepping up the promotion of horticulture products in the Indian markets. It will launch a series of promos beginning Monday from Chennai.

The focus of the "Australia Fresh" campaign will be the Australian apples. It would cover all major Indian cities. In South, it will cover Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai.

According to Mr A.K. Tareen, Manager-South India of Austrade, "Though Australian apples have been available in India for a few years now, the promotion through both super markets and wholesale markets was to emphasise to the consumers the health and safety aspects of the new season apples". India has emerged as the largest export market for Australian apples. It has overtaken traditional markets such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, UK and Singapore. The growth in India during 2000 to 2003 has been nearly 100 per cent, he said.
