Kochi, June 16
COIR exports from the country increased 16 per cent to a record Rs 473.40 crore in 2004-05.
The coir industry's production during the year totalled Rs 1,800 crore, said Mr Anupam Dasgupta, Secretary, Ministry of Agro & Rural industries.
Speaking at the India International Commodity Fair, Mr Dasgupta said despite good growth of coir products exports, it was time the coir industry went in for value addition and adopted the global standards of marketing.
Also, the growth of the industry was not resulting in consequent growth in employment of opportunities, Mr Dasgupta said.
He said the country's coir sector should also strive to move towards a strong intellectual property rights regime.
A statement from the Coir Board said coir exports, in volume terms, recorded a growth of 20 per cent year-on-year at 1,22,927 tonnes. "The export during the year surpassed the target set at Rs 450 crore," the Board said.
