DR R.S. Paroda, plant breeder and former Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has been selected for the prestigious Norman E. Borlaug Award, given by Coromandel Fertilisers, a constituent of the Murugappa Group for 2005.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a gold medal and a citation. It is given for meritorious contributions in the field of agriculture research.

Dr Paroda will receive the award on January 5 at the 93rd session of the Indian Science Congress at the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU).

Announcing the award today, Mr V. Ravichandran, President and wholetime director of Coromandel Fertilisers, told newspersons that Dr Jacques Diouf, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Rome, would deliver the Coromandel lecture on `Sustainable Food Security and Rural Prosperity' on the occasion.

The President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is likely to confer the award on Dr Paroda, who was instrumental in the formulation and implementation of the Vision 2020 documents in agriculture as D-G, ICAR. The Borlaug award selection committee is headed by Dr M.S. Swaminathan.

This is the 31st award being conferred, since its inception in the early 1970s by the company, which has a turnover of $1.5 billion and presence in fertilisers, pesticides, insurance, nutraceuticals, abrasives, etc.
