Dr Villoo Morawala-Patell, Founder and CMD of biotech company Avesthagen Ltd, has been conferred the ‘Astitva Award’ for excellence in science and technology 2008. The award was presented by the Zee-Archana Astitva Awards in Mumbai on Saturday, a release said. The Astitva Award recognises and honours dynamic Indian women achievers who have made significant contributions in various fields to society. Dr Patell has been chosen for her commitment to the development of biotechnology in India and contribution to scientific research. Past recipients include Ms Anu Agha, Ms Lalita Gupte, Dr Almeida, Ms Leela Samson and Ms Pamela Philipose. Dr Morawala-Patell, a scientist and businesswoman, founded Avesthagen in April 1998 which today has grown to a leading Indian life sciences company based on the convergence of food, pharmaceuticals and population genetics.
