Saturday's accident at Essar Steel is unlikely to affect production in a major way and the company claims that the damaged electric arc furnace will be operational in a "couple of days".

"The loss in production will be minimal. Normal production has resumed in the other two units. One furnace is down, but we expect that too to start production in the next few days," a senior Essar Steel executive told

The total installed capacity at Essar Steel's Hazira plant is 4.5 million tonnes per annum from three furnaces.

On Saturday, water came into contact with molten metal in one of the furnaces, leading to an explosion in which 11 workers were injured.

An Essar Steel spokesperson said that seven workers had been discharged while two had been shifted to Mumbai for treatment.
