Kolkata, Aug. 29
Last week an indefinite lock-out was declared at the Panikhowa division of the Samdang tea estate belonging to Doom Dooma Tea Company Ltd after a group of workers assaulted senior managers.
Doom Dooma Tea Co, which earlier belonged to Hindustan Lever, has been recently acquired by McLeod Russel India Ltd of the BM Khaitan Group.
Confirming the development a senior official of McLeod Russel India said problem started after the management succeeded in unearthing an old network for green leaves pilferage.
The company has already informed the district labour officer, civil and police administration and the trade unions about the whole incident. "The managers were injured but realising gravity of the whole situation the management declared the lock-out," the official said.
At present, production in the division has stopped, but the official added that the situation is totally "under control".
However, the episode would not leave much of an impact on the total annual of production McLeod, which is the world's largest bulk tea producer with an annual capacity of 70 million kg.
