CONCERIA Virginia Chennai Pvt Ltd, which announced start of commercial production of bovine leather on Friday, plans to set up a showroom in Guangzhou, China.

With the 6 million sq ft unit starting commercial production, the company is thinking of a second phase, which is slated for 2006. The objective will be to double production over the next five years.

For now, the joint venture between Conceria Virginia Italy and the Chennai-based Forward group will introduce international quality bovine leather made with Italian technology to the leather products manufacturers in the local and international markets.

Some of the target markets include the Far East, China and Japan, and Europe, according to Forward group's Managing Director, Mr Muhamad Yavar Dhala. Therefore, the company is scouting for a location in China to set up a showroom for its finished leathers. It has opened a showroom in Chennai, he said.

Conceria Virginia's strength is its technology and ability to come up with innovative types of leather such as washable leather, waterproof leather and the eco-friendly chrome-free leather. While some of these products are being reserved for the second phase, the company is looking at introducing a whole new range of leathers for the leather product manufacturers of leading international brands, Mr Dhala said.

The industry here needs not just the leather products but also high performance and fashion leather to cater to make the products for the international markets. That is what the joint venture aims to provide, and over the next few years the capacity is likely to be doubled, he said.
