TOYOTA Kirloskar and its employees' union will meet on June 8 to thrash out the issue over taking back some suspended employees.

Sources in Toyota said that the talks between the management and the employees are expected to be held in the presence of the Labour Commissioner.

Toyota Kirloskar maintains that until an independent enquiry into the suspension of 15 employees is completed, it cannot take up the issue of taking them back.

But the union is insistent that they should be taken back immediately. Otherwise, the workers may stage a walk out for some days. Currently, the work is continuing as per schedule and there has been no walk out by the employees so far, sources said.

The company has already made offers to its employees on wages and most of them have accepted the new deal, they said.

The Toyota-Kirloskar Deputy Managing Director, Mr K.K. Swamy, earlier told Business line that the employees had been given raises between 15 per cent and 18 per cent.

He, however, said that certain people who do not belong to the company were trying to misguide the employees into starting an agitation. Hence, if necessary, the company might consider setting up another plant in north India.

Mr Swamy wanted the State Government to take tough action against those who are trying to disrupt the industrial climate in the State. Toyota has over 400 acres of land in its Bidadi plant and less than half of the land has been utilised so far even though its plant's capacity is about 60,000 units per annum.

Toyota's plant has witnessed labour unrest in 2001 and again in 2002 hitting the production of their vehicles leading to a ban of the strike by the Government.
