Atlanta, June 23
Reflecting its increasing focus on the Indian market, Paris-based power generation and rail transport major Alstom has appointed the former ICICI Bank Joint Managing Director, Ms Lalita Gupte, as an independent member on its global board of directors.
The annual shareholders' meeting of Alstom, held in Paris on June 22, approved the appointment of Ms Gupte and Ms Katrina Landis, Group Vice-President of BP Alternative Energy, as members of its board.
“These nominations aim to develop the diversity of Alstom's board members. Because of their Indian and American nationalities, rich and diverse professional careers and contributions to major companies such as ICICI Bank or BP, Ms Gupte and Ms Landis will bring to the board their international experience and knowledge of the markets where Alstom operates,” the company said about the appointments.
Ms Gupte, 61, holds a Bachelor's degree in economics and a Master's degree in management studies from Mumbai University. Beginning her career with ICICI Ltd in 1971, she held various leadership positions in areas of corporate and retail banking, strategy and international banking.
She had been instrumental in transforming ICICI Bank into a diversified financial services group. She was specifically in charge of developing the retail business, the listing of ICICI on the New York Stock Exchange in 1998-99, before leading the bank's international operations starting in 2001. Between 2002 and 2006, she was the Chief Operating Officer and member of the board of ICICI Bank.
Ms Gupte is currently Non-Executive Chairman of ICICI Venture Funds Management Co and a board member of Nokia and Bharat Forge Ltd.
Following the appointments, Alstom's board of directors, chaired by Mr Patrick Kron, Chairman and CEO, would have 14 members, of whom nine are independent directors.
