It is essential for bankers to educate self-help groups (SHGs) on the advantage of solar energy, according to Dr N.K. Thingalaya, former Chairman and Managing Director of Syndicate Bank.

Inaugurating a training programme on `Opportunities for financing energy efficient projects' at the regional training college of Nabard, he said that out of 19.9 crore households in the country, only 5.22 lakh use solar energy.

Rural areas can get the benefit of solar energy if bankers educate the 18 lakh SHGs in the country.

He stressed the need to curb wasteful use of power and to prevent transmission losses and pilferages.
