New Delhi, April 28

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has said that the Central Government should quickly phase out central sales tax (CST) as it is not compatible with value added tax (VAT).

"States should impress upon the Central Government to do away with CST. States should also reach an agreement on the compensation formula required for phasing out CST," Ms Sushma Berlia, PHDCCI President, said in a statement issued here on Friday. Issues relating to VAT and the need to remove inter-state trade barriers are to come up for deliberations at a Summit of Chief Secretaries of Northern States to be organised by PHDCCI on April 29.
