The Minister for Rural Development, Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, said on Friday that keeping in view the potential of jatropha on wastelands and the resulting rural employment generation potential, his Ministry has been identified as the nodal ministry for operationalisation of the National Mission on Bio-Diesel. Addressing a press conference, he said that the mission is to be implemented initially as a demonstration project for promoting Jatropha curcas cultivation in forest and non-forest areas in wastelands over a period of five years. A committee on the development of bio-fuel was set up under the Chairmanship of Dr D.N.Tewari, then Member Planning Commission, which submitted its report to the Commission in April 2003. The panel's main recommendation was launching of a National Mission on Bio-diesel with special focus on plantation of jatropha on wastelands, the Minister said.
