Ship launched anti-submarine torpedoes capable of carrying 200 kg of high energy explosive would be ready for production by 2009.

Heavier torpedoes, submersibles and stealth technology are high on the development list of the Visakhapatnam-based, Naval Science and Technology Laboratory (NSTL), as it strives to bolster the Indian Navy's fighting capabilities.
Ship launched anti-submarine torpedoes, weighing between 1,500-1,700 kg, and capable of carrying 200 kg of high energy explosive, under development would be ready for production by 2009, the newly appointed Director of NSTL, Dr V. Bhujanga Rao, has said here.
The NSTL has already developed light-weight, anti-submarine torpedoes, weighing 200 kg. Ready for launch from both a ship and a helicopter, the Indian Navy has placed an order for inducting 25 of these.
The Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) will be manufacturing them, he told newspersons.
India is the eighth country with the capability to develop these torpedoes. The NSTL is one of the chain of defence laboratories, under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), specialises in developing underwater weapons, mines, decoys and create expertise.
The laboratory has firmed up a futuristic programme for warships and submarines to strengthen the Indian Navy. This includes stealth technology, submersibles and software that can enable several technologies, Dr Rao said.
The design for submersibles (which are vehicles that can go up to 500 metres) has been frozen.
The first versions should be ready in the next four years. They have both civilian and military applications.
Military, includes laying mines and photography, while civilian would mean rescuing, debris clearing, inspection of underwater pipes etc.
