Aimed at offering a comfortable and homely accommodation to senior citizens, the Bangalore-based Sobha Developers has set up a modern facility - Sobha Hermitage - at Vadakkenchery in Palakkad district.
The resort like home, set up at an investment of Rs 12 crore, is nestled on a green estate of 24 acres of plantation. The hermitage has 50 well-designed rooms, a modern kitchen that serves pure vegetarian food, spacious dining room to accommodate 65 people, a Laundromat with essential equipment etc.
The home also has a polyclinic attached to it and periodic interaction with eminent persons from health, nutrition, psychology, human relationship and spirituality subjects are also arranged.
Speaking to a group of media persons from Kochi and Palakkad, Col (retd) V.K. Balan, Director, said that the hermitage is the brainchild of Mr P.N.C. Menon, Chairman of the Sobha Group. The concept is to offer senior citizens a place of love, care and geriatric medical assistance and superior quality of life during their old age.
The concept of senior citizens' homes varying in areas of services is very popular in developed countries. In the fast-changing society, such community living is becoming indispensable as the need emerges very fast with the realisation of the increasing longevity, he said.
In today's family scenario, he said, many old couples are facing loneliness due to children staying afar or abroad, personnel problems or being issueless. In the evening of their lives, there is no one to take care of them. Sobha Hermitage is a good solution to such issues, he added.
Mr A.R. Kutty, Vice-President, Sobha Developers, said the criteria for admission is above 60 years of age and residents should make an interest-free refundable deposit of Rs 7 lakh per room. There will also be a monthly charge depending on the type of rooms.
Fifty per cent of the rooms are reserved exclusively for deserving people to whom all the facilities and amenities are provided totally free of charge. The remaining rooms are on payment basis.
The amenities at the hermitage are of international quality. All cleaning and kitchen staff are specially trained in five star hotels to meet stringent quality standards, he said.
