The Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh, today assured members of Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA) that his Ministry would soon start a `Global Trade Program' for women to expand their global trading network.

In an interaction with members at SEWA's Trade Facilitation Centre here, he emphasised the need for empowering women in all aspects of life, saying his Ministry would start the new programme for women working in informal sector. He also invited proposals from the SEWA Centre.

Mr Ramesh said his Ministry would also support export activities on the SEWA model.

The Minister, who arrived here today on a first-ever, two-day visit to Gujarat, also went to village Aniyor in Sabarkantha district to inspect the Gram Mahila Haat, part of the State-level marketing network organisation of SEWA. He had a dialogue with about 150 women members engaged in 15 different trades and apprised himself of the barriers they faced in trade promotion, SEWA sources said.
