The synthetic diamond units in the districts of Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Dindigul and Karur, affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Synthetic Diamond All Manufacturers' Association, downed the shutters on Tuesday to press their 15-point charter of demands to revive the trade. The members of the association presented a memorandum containing their demands to the authorities.

According to the association President, Mr G. Tiruvenkatam, the demands included slapping a ban on the import of synthetic diamonds from foreign countries, setting up exclusive gem park in Tiruchi, research and development centre to update and enhance the skills of synthetic diamond manufacturers, quality training centre for imparting specialised training for the labourers and constitution of an exclusive synthetic diamond welfare labour board.
