A trade mission from the Southern United States Trade Association (SUSTA) was here in the city to promote and market `high-end' food products from the southern states of the US. The team will also visit Mumbai and New Delhi to showcase its products, meet importers and buyers and scan the retail scene in the country for export purposes.

The food products include oatmeal, chips, snacks, cookies and sauce. SUSTA also introduced to India a tree nut called `pecan' that claims to have a range of nutrients such as proteins, calcium, vitamins and magnesium. The nut can be added to diary products, cereals, snacks, cookies, cakes and confectionery; it can also be used to make bread.

Potential market

Ms Bernadette Wiltz, Director, Generic Program, SUSTA, said: "India is a potential market for SUSTA. Our market research shows there is a good market particularly for niche products such as pet foods or health foods having low sugar content and anti-oxidant properties. We plan to showcase and export food products targeted at the upper end consumers particularly in metros and mini metros."

SUSTA is a non-profit agricultural export development organisation that works with the Department of Agriculture of the 15 southern states of the US.

Salwa Foods, Acorn International, Florida's Natural, BNR Global and Custom Ingredients were some of the companies that have come to India, as part of the SUSTA trade mission. The visit was co-ordinated by New Delhi-based Imports2India Consulting, SUSTA's in-country consultant.
