The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has collected direct tax arrears of Rs 5,574 crore during April-August this year. The Finance Ministry has set for itself direct tax arrear collection target of Rs 11,000 crore for 2006-07.

"Our arrear collection up to August stood at Rs 5,574 crore, which is about 50.7 per cent of target," the CBDT spokesperson, Mr A.K. Sinha told reporters.

In 2005-06, the CBDT collected direct tax arrears of Rs 8,064 crore.
