STATE Government employees could be found wearing handloom dresses every Saturday if the Joint Action Committee (JAC) succeeds in its move.

In what it touts as a step to protect the weavers and those depending on the handloom sector for livelihood, the JAC has urged Government staff to compulsorily wear handloom clothes once a week.

The State Government has already issued a circular requesting all employees to inculcate the habit of wearing handloom clothes. This was done in view of the problems confronting the handloom industry.

Mr A. Krishna Reddy, Secretary General of the JAC, said: "It was our duty to preserve this ancient treasure, in the wake of threats to its very existence owing to rapid modernisation."
