THE Union Minister for SSI, Mr Mahabir Prasad, on Monday said the Government was taking new initiatives to sharpen its focus on the khadi and village industries sector to increase rural employment.

Talking to presspersons here, Mr Prasad said the Sukhtankar Committee, which has been constituted to study and recommend the future structure and role to be played by the erstwhile Khadi and Village Industries Commission, would be submitting its report in a few days. He said the Government's intention was to make khadi and village industries products compete in the global market. "We will also encourage these products getting ISO certifications," he said.

With the help of the `Sphoorti' scheme and other khadi and rural employment generation programmes, the Government expected to create employment opportunities for 4 lakh people and touch an estimated sale of about Rs 13,000 crore, he said.
