MADURAI: Thanks to the initiative of the Travel Club, Madurai and the State's Department of Tourism, a six-day skill upgradation training programme for cab drivers and hotel employees is underway in the city as a measure to create the right environment for promotion of tourism industry in the region.

A wide-range of topics such as fairs and festivals, archaeological monuments, psychology and information about tourist places will be discussed, in addition to a session on first aid.

According to the officials of the Tourism Department, a sum of Rs 50,000 has been provided for the conduct of the programme. Such training programmes are to be conducted in Thanjavur, Udhagamandalam and Chennai. Currently 40 persons are attending the programme daily.

The President of Travel Club, Dr Vasudevan said the programme aimed at bringing about the right attitudinal change towards tourists, both domestic and foreign. There are plans to periodically review the impact of the training programme to give a boost to tourism in the region, he added.
