APARTMENTS for the elderly, custom-built residential blocks for young working couples and now, a Pune-based player in the real estate development business, Gera Developments has announced a housing complex which is designed with children and their needs in mind.

Work on the 160-apartment complex has already commenced and when complete will have features that will make life easier for working parents who are increasingly faced with concerns over leaving children either unattended or in the care of someone else, says Mr Rohit Gera, Director, Operations.

"We talked to a cross-section of parents and found that they are concerned about the safety and well-being of their kids while they are away at work and decided that the time is ripe for a segmentation of the real estate development on a child centric basis," he says.

Gera's Emerald City will make life a lot more fun and safe for kids living there. Among the amenities being offered are larger play areas for kids, situated out of the way of passing vehicles, study rooms with children-friendly furniture designed for kids, drop off zones, gurukul areas, locker rooms for storing their toys and roller skates, separate parking areas for the kids vehicles, covered waiting area for school buses and separate play areas for children of different age groups.

The company will also provide personality development opportunities for the kids with a music room with instruments and telescopes on the terrace being proposed features along with bird baths and fish ponds for the kids.

Safety features at Emerald City will include lift doors with sensors at lower levels for children, rounded corners, child safe switches, bathroom doors that can unlock from outside, night lights in the kids living areas, fire proof wires not to mention swing at the gates at the top of each staircase to prevent toddlers from getting into accidents.

Situated in the Baner area of the city, Emerald City will be the first of a number of similar projects that the Geras propose to set up. "Pune city has seen a lot development targeted at senior citizens, IT professionals etc but a residential complex that will give a better quality of life to children and peace of mind to their parents has not happened and we intend to tap this niche," says Mr Kumar Gera, Managing Director.
