THE Tamil Nadu Government has sought the Centre's assistance to support the dyeing units in Tirupur to set up effluent treatment facilities.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, said that a subsidy should be made available to units based in Tirupur.

The new guidelines under the Textile Centre Infrastructure Development Scheme do not cover the pollution control equipment and gear.

These guidelines should be changed.

The funds should be made available mostly as subsidy since the Tirupur-based exporters have brought in over 25 per cent of the cost of equipment, the letter said.
