WITH economic buoyancy driving the job market, head-hunters and recruiters no longer want to merely compete in the marketplace, but prefer to grow collectively chanting `co-opetition' mantra while setting new benchmarks and evolving a code of conduct.

The Indian recruitment industry, which is extremely fragmented, has about 10,000 players. Of them about 63 companies, who account for 50 per cent of the total business, have come together to form Executive Recruiters Association, which is hosting an all-India recruiters meet in Hyderabad next month.

The question top on recruiters' agenda is can an organisation fully outsource recruitment? Since this is not the case as yet, strive to prepare a ground to pave this level of comfort.

Speaking to Business Line, the Managing Director of TMI network, Mr T. Sreedhar, Chief Executive Officer of Cucumber Consultants; Ms Parvathy Krishna, and Mr.M.R. Shantaram of Intercon, and Mr Vijaykumar Bhattiprolu of Aakarsh, said, "Increasingly, we feel the need to bring this fragmented industry together to work as a team."

All stakeholders in the supply chain, the organisation, HR manager and recruitment consultants are equally affected as each one has a role to play.

It is imperative that all stakeholders work in partnership to bring in best practices that help optimise costs. This would be by evolving clear indicators of the productivity of the recruiting effort.

The Executive Recruiters Association, a non-profit Chamber of Commerce representing search, selection and staffing consultants firms in India, is hosting a National Conference on Selection that would come out with white papers.

Given the fragmented nature of the industry, recruiters are of the view that a self-regulating body to restrict unethical recruitment practices would help improve the system.

This would be by sharing information, improving professional standards and formulating policies and guidelines. This would gradually help recruiters scale up the value chain, they said.

One of the key objectives of the national event is to evolve a code of ethics.
