THE Mangalore Commissionerate of Central Excise collected service tax to the tune of Rs 51 crore during the current financial year. The target for the current fiscal is Rs 128 crore.

The Assistant Commissioner of Central Excise, Mr Karunakaran, disclosed this at an interactive meeting organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore on Thursday.

The meeting was convened to discuss the issues related to levy of service tax on transport of goods by roads. Mr Karunakaran said the commissionerate collected tax to the tune of Rs 1.69 crore from those transporting goods by roads. The commissionerate expects to collect Rs 5 crore under this head during the current fiscal, he said.

He urged the service providers to make use of e-filing of returns facility. Service providers belonging to 18 different categories can make use of this facility.

Nil returns will also have to be filed by the service providers, he added.

Dr John Joseph, Commissioner of Central Excise, was present. Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, KCCI President, presided over the meeting.
