CELEBRATING success, allowing two-way communication and making room for total employee involvement will have positive impact on the work culture in an organisation, according to Mr C.N. Prasad, President of Sundaram Clayton Ltd.

"When a managing director of a company goes to the scene of activity and praises a worker for his good work, it acts as a great motivator," he said, relating his company's experience in developing a democratic and creative team culture.

Delivering the keynote address at the Man'Exe-05 (Manufacturing Excellence) here on Wednesday, he said visits by top officials to the scene of activity would make a lot of difference.

Gestures like these would send a non-verbal message to the employees that they were part of a homogeneous system.

Emphasising the need for regular review of the work, Mr Prasad said monthly reviews would give 12 opportunities in a year to assess and rework the strategies. "Daily reviews would give 300 opportunities as against just one in the case of annual review," he said.

Manufacturing excellence was the methodology to enhance customer value by achieving significant improvements in new product development, quality, cost and delivery capability to achieve competitive advantage.

The second in the series of `Leadership series on manufacturing excellence' being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII-Andhra Pradesh), Man'Exe focused on various models such as Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing.

He also stressed on regular orientation at all levels and cross-functional approach would give the ability to respond quality.

In his presentation, Mr K.P. Gopal, Director of Stuser Tools (Chennai), spoke on `SME Clusters - The Ambattur Experience' to highlight the need for a cluster approach to achieve manufacturing excellence.

"It means lower costs. Peer pressure and benchmarking among the cluster members would help," he said.
