In talks with OEMs; may finalise a partner in 3-4 months

In a bid to tap the rapidly growing thin client computing market in India, Wyse Technology is exploring options to manufacture the devices in the country.

Thin clients, a stripped down version of computers, are configured for purpose of server-based computing, wherein an organisation's applications reside on a shared server as opposed to an individual personal computer.

Mr Tarkan Maner, President, Worldwide Field Operations, Wyse Technology, said the company was in talks with a couple of OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) in India and may finalise a partner over the next three to four months.

At present, Wyse sources thin clients for Indian markets from its manufacturing facilities in China and Taipei. The company has a research and development facility in Bangalore.

Wyse estimates the Indian thin client market to exceed 200,000 units this year. Wyse is seeing increasing demand from sectors such as business process outsourcing, banking and financial services, education, government, retail, aviation and healthcare among others, Mr Maner said.

India, along with China, Latin America and Eastern Europe, are the fastest growing geographies for Wyse, which has a global market share of 40 per cent, Mr Maner said. "We are aggressively targeting booming sectors such as BPO through special pricing, packing and support services" he said. India accounts for some two per cent of Wyse's global revenues at present and is expected to go up significantly in coming years, he said.

"We have grown by some 70 per cent in past 12 months and expect to sustain that growth momentum over the next few years," said Ms Rekha Murthy, Country Manager, Wyse Technology Sales and Marketing India Pvt Ltd. Bulk of the growth in India is coming from the replacement market, wherein companies are opting for thin clients while replacing desktops to save on both operational and capital expenditure costs, she said.
