Operators continue to flout norms: Misra

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said that it wants more powers to deal with operators violating quality of service norms. Mr Nripendra Misra, Chairman, TRAI, told

that there was an urgent need to address the problems faced by consumers in terms of poor quality of services and the Government would have to give the regulator more powers for enforcing the prescribed norms.

Punitive Measures

"We have already written to the Government seeking more teeth in dealing with operators who are not meeting the standards. As far as TRAI is concerned, consumer interest is a more important issue than matters such as 3G or spectrum," Mr Misra said on the sidelines of the 3GSM World Congress Asia.

Telecom service providers have continuously failed to meet the TRAI-specified norms for offering good quality of services. While the TRAI brings out a report every quarter highlighting the deteriorating standards being offered by the operators, it has no powers to take punitive measures against the operators who do not meet the benchmark. TRAI measures QoS through various factors such as call drops, complaint address mechanism, time taken for repairing a fault among other things.
