New Delhi, Nov. 8
The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and Afilias India Private Ltd announced that the `.IN' domain has reached 2,00,000 registrations and has doubled its presence in the market place since last year.
Launched in 2004 by the Department of Information Technology (DIT) and NIXI, the .IN registry has witnessed a growth of nearly 30 times the initial size of approximately 6,500 domains prior to January 2005.
While India rated 63 per cent in the usage of .IN domain name, 37 per cent were registered outside the country. Over 150 countries are registered as .IN domain owners. This includes the US and Germany, which together account for over 81 per cent of registrations, followed by the UK, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Switzerland and Italy.
"High number of registered users outside the country on this domain could be attributed to a variety of reasons including cost factor, the preference of non-resident Indians to use this domain as well as a business strategy among MNCs to give a local flavour to the Indian page. Also, NIXI has less restrictions on registration and has appointed registrars in various countries to promote .IN domain," said Mr Amitabh Singhal, former President of Internet Service Providers of India (ISPI).
