To look beyond conventional focus on industrial automation and control

To cater to the growing Indian virtual instrumentation market, National Instruments (NI), global provider of test and measurement services, is planning to hire candidates for its sales and research centres in India.
Virtual instrumentation refers to customising instruments to suit an organisation's needs as opposed to traditional instruments that have fixed, vendor-defined functionality. Virtual instruments are user-defined, and have hardware and software components.
According to Mr John Graff, Vice-President of Marketing and Customer Operations, NI, adoption of virtual instrumentation is stronger in India compared to other countries in the world.
"Since 1998, growth from India has outpaced our growth from the rest of the world," he said in a telephonic interaction with
Business Line. NI Worldwide has grown at 16 per cent (year on year), while NI Asia has grown at 24 per cent (year on year), he said.
Comforted by this growth, the company plans to look beyond its conventional focus on industrial automation and control to areas such as wireless communication, plant automation, embedded systems and testing in the automotive industry.
To capitalise on the opportunity in this area, NI is organising educational seminars on virtual instrumentation targeted at industries. This year, Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi and Hyderabad will host these seminars.
It also plans to offer virtual instrumentation training to students by installing its test and measurement software `LabVIEW' in education institutes.
"We have tied up with about 70 colleges in India, including IITs, to aid research in virtual instrumentation besides providing internship opportunities to students.
This year, we plan to cover about 65 more colleges, including polytechnics," said Mr Jayaram Pillai, Regional Manager, India, Russia and Arabia, National Instruments.
