ENTHUSED by the response it received from technology companies, Infopark, the information technology (IT) and business process outsourcing (BPO) infrastructure facility in Kochi, is planning to begin the second phase of its expansion next fiscal with an area of three-lakh square feet (sq. ft.).
"We want to start as early as we can. We will start work on the second facility next year," said Mr K.G. Girish Babu, Chief Executive Officer of Infopark. He said the entire 2.2-lakh sq. ft. area in a new building at the Infopark has already been sold out.
Mr Babu said Infopark is aiming to eventually create an area of 1.7 million sq. ft that will propel Kochi into the league of major IT and BPO destinations in the country.
"We will be on the top of the second-tier cities," he said. The process of acquiring more land for Infopark is on. Currently, Infopark has 100 acres of land and the plan is to add another 136 acres. Mr Babu said that the proposed 1.7 million sq. ft space would be created in four buildings, of which the first one is now getting ready. Wipro takes more landInfopark's biggest boost came from software major Wipro, which leased 14.26 acres at the facility to set up its campus. Wipro Infotech is now setting up a facility at the existing SDF-IT building.
Mr Babu said Wipro Technologies, the software exporting arm, has also moved to Infopark, and has leased additional land to expand Wipro's campus to 25 acres.
Wipro is planning to set up a 5,000-people facility in Kochi over a period of time. Currently, it has a 62-seat facility, which is expected to commence operations shortly.
Besides Wipro, Affiliated Computer Services (ACS), a US-based BPO and IT services company, has also moved to Infopark. ACS plans to have 1,500 people in two years.
