Nokia to firm up plant location by next month

MOBILE phone maker Nokia expects to decide on the location of its manufacturing facility in India by next month even as it plans to reduce prices of its handsets.

Nokia's head for marketing, Mr Sanjay Behl, told newspersons on the sidelines of the launch of Nokia's first concept store in the country in Bangalore, that the new facility is expected to start operations by the end of the year. He said the company is currently working on its plan to pass on the benefit of duty cuts to the customers. "We will pass on whatever benefits (to the customers) the Budget has given," Mr Behl said.

Mr Behl said Nokia could also start exporting to other Asian countries from its new facility in India. Nokia has increased its market share in India to 68 per cent from 56 per cent during the last 12 months.

Mr Behl said the concept store, some of which have been set up in European countries, features the full range of Nokia products. "We are keen to lead a unique mobile retailing experience for the consumers through these touch points," Mr Behl said.

All the products displayed at the concept store will be fully functional to enable consumers to try out the newest applications of the phones from Nokia. The layout and design of the store follows the same pattern as Nokia concept store around the world. Nokia will launch its second concept store in Delhi in another four months. Subsequently, all the tier-I cities in India will have at least one concept store, Mr Behl said.
