Vasanta Bhavan opens boutique hotel

The promoters of ‘Namma Veedu' Vasanta Bhavan, a Chennai-based hotel chain, have launched a 50-room boutique hotel that marries, according to its promoters, two of Chennai's favourite pastime — movies and dining out.

According to Mr Anand Krishnan, Director and promoter of the hotel ‘The Spring,' it has a pub named ‘Star Rock,' a restaurant, a 24-hour coffee shop and banquet halls that will cater to the business segment during the day and to the club goers in the evening. The restaurant offers a la carte menu and a buffet option priced around Rs 400. The rack rate for the rooms is around Rs 6,000.

This is to be the first of a chain of hotels the promoters are planning in Chennai and international locations through franchisees.

Mr Krishnan said their next project is to come up on 100-ft road on a one-acre property. This would be launched in 2011 with 150 rooms at a budget of about Rs 40-50 crore. The promoters are also looking at Australia and Germany where properties would be developed through franchisees.

In ‘The Spring', the movie theme can be seen in the restaurant which has two screens that will feature three movies a day, and the coffee shop has the ‘Rajini theme', highlighting the superstar's movies. The banquet hall sports the art works of the popular ‘Thotta' Tharani, a leading art director and an artist of significant repute.

‘Namma Veedu' Vasanta Bhavan is a leading hotel chain in Chennai with franchises in China, Sri Lanka and the US.

Geze India starts operations

Geze International GmbH, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer of door and window control systems, formally launched its operations in India with an assembling unit in Chennai.

Geze India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the German company, will assemble opening and closing devices and integrate them with safety and security systems at the facility here.

Mr David P. Gayen, Managing Director, Geze India, said the facility would cater to the entire range of building markets, including industrial, residential and commercial.

Addressing a press conference at the launch, he said Geze India will offer customised solutions for the Indian and neighbouring markets. The company started operations in July 2009 and now has its own infrastructure to meet its entire requirements.

Mr Guido Munz, Managing Director, Geze International, who will also oversee Indian operations, said the subsidiary would also cater to markets in Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bangladesh and the Maldives.

Geze's product lines cover door technology, automatic door systems, glass systems, window technology, heat and smoke extraction systems, and safety technology covering escape route systems, security gate controls and access control.

Metros to build based on BEE norms

By 2011, about 10 million sq.ft space in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad will be built according to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency norms. Addressing presspersons, Mr Pankaj Dharkar, Past National President of Indian Society for Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (Ishare), said 367 buildings have been registered with Ishare for implementing the green building concept.

This, he said, was despite the higher cost of construction as developers knew that they would be able to save up to 30 per cent annually on power consumption. Mr Suneel Advani, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Blue Star, pointed out that air-conditioners alone consumed 26 billion units of power, which is about four per cent of electricity produced in the country and by 2020 the figure was likely to touch 470 billion units.

There is an urgent need for more efficient air-conditioning systems and green buildings codes could soon become mandatory. Developers were no longer entrusting the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services of buildings to small and mid-sized contractors. Larger contractors capable of integrating the services, besides being able to bring in higher energy efficiency, were clearly preferred.
