The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has taken up work to develop airstrips and smaller airports in West Bengal. The Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, told the Lok Sabha today that work on operationalising Cooch Behar airport is being carried out in a phased manner with strengthening and expansion of the runway and apron for operation of ATR-72 aircraft. The terminal building has also been renovated. There are also plans to construct a new terminal building, fire station and ATC tower-cum-technical block. Malda airport too is being proposed to be made fit for ATR-72 aircraft, says a press release.
