New Delhi, March 21
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to invite bids next week for automation of 14 toll plazas as a pilot project. The automated payment systems would co-exist with manual payment systems in those stretches.
"We would be inviting tenders next week for 14 stretches for electronic toll collection system," said Mr S.C. Jindal, Chief General Manager, NHAI while speaking at conference on road development in India.
Once automated, there would be lanes where road users can drive past using an on-board unit that would be attached to the windscreens of their vehicles and the requisite toll would be deducted automatically. There would also be provision for smart card lanes, where road users can swipe a smart card for paying their tolls.
