DHL, the express and logistics company, will use its fleet of vehicles across the country to collect and deliver relief contributions for victims of the tsunami tragedy.

This initiative will be undertaken jointly with Assocham and the Red Cross.

According to an official release, DHL has set up a special call centre cell and a national toll-free DHL Relief Helpline (1600-22-6666) for the same.

The helpline will be operational from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. between January 5 and 15, for anyone keen to donate to the relief operations.

It has set up a separate helpline number (55719345) in Chennai for collection of contributions within the city.

DHL Express vehicles will pick up contributions from the homes and corporate offices of callers in the 12 cities that it operates in, namely, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune, and Tirupur.

In consultation with NGOs, the express carrier has narrowed down the list of immediate relief requirements to three: blankets, medicines (tablets in plastic bottles or strips), and cheques drawn in the name of the "Prime Minister's National Relief Fund." Contributions to the fund enjoy full tax exemption under Section 80G.

While contributions in the form of blankets and medicines will be forwarded to the Red Cross in Chennai for disbursement in the affected areas, all the cheques would be sent to Assocham in Delhi, which will liaise with the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Home for the operations.
