THE Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has tied up with the Essel group-promoted Intrex India Ltd, to provide Internet booking with pre-paid cards.
Addressing a press conference here today, the Chief Regional Manager of IRCTC, Mr G. Laxmi Narayan, said "a large number of potential customers wanting to buy tickets online do not own or use credit cards both in smaller cities and among the less economically advantaged sections of society even in metros."
The Head of Itz Cash, Intrex Ltd, Mr Gurpreet Bakshi, said "this initiative will enable Itz cash to increase market penetration and widen customer base".
Although more than four lakh railway tickets are booked every day, only a small part of total booking is handled through the Internet. In spite of the option of online booking being available in around 130 cities all over India, so far, the online purchase is mainly concentrated in big metros of Delhi and Mumbai.
Mr Bakshi said Itz cash is a pre-paid card available in various denominations from Rs 100 onwards. It is a multi-purpose prepaid card that enables consumers to shop online, book railway tickets, buy Internet connection packages and play online games.
The company has tied-up with Indiatimes.com, Rediff.com, Asian Sky Sop, Zee Interactive Learning, HCL Infinet, Playwin and Dish TV.
